10-Year Papers | 2-Year Papers
In the list of most-cited papers for the two-year period, Mars and Titan continue to attract attention. Heading the list we find results from the Wet Chemistry Laboratory aboard the Phoenix, which arrived at the Martian surface in May 2008. The chemical analysis has revealed soluble chlorine, in the form of perchlorates. The discovery strengthens claims that low-temperature brines, which are stable on Mars right now, may be involved in gully formation.
For a different example of planetary scientists following the water, there is a paper describing icy jets and plumes on Saturn's moon Enceladus. These may be frozen geysers driven by subsurface liquid water. Papers on other planetary systems describe the discovery of an ultra-low density exoplanet, and of another cold planet that has the mass of Neptune. The paper on the National Ignition Facility makes this listing because it can re-create physical conditions in the central cores of large planets.

About the 2-year Paper List:
The baseline time span for this database is January 1, 2001-March 18, 2011. The resulting database contained 9,400 (10 years) and 2,416 (2 years) papers.
This information pertains to both the 2- and 10-year papers.
General Information
Reviewing highly cited papers can help to determine what research areas within a Special Topic have had a significant impact over a given period of time. Special Topics lists the 20 most-cited papers over the past decade and over the past two years, based on a set of criteria uniquely tailored to each individual Topic. Details of these criteria are given within each Topic.
By examining highly cited papers over both the past decade and over the most recent two-year period, we can make observations and comparisons regarding long-term trends and more recent activity that has the potential to be the next long-term trend.
What are Special Topics?
Special Topics, from ScienceWatch.com, is designed to complement Essential Science IndicatorsSM from Clarivate in providing citation analyses and commentary for selected scientific research areas that have experienced notable recent advances or are of special current interest.
Read about the overall methodology for Special Topics in the "What are Special Topics?" page.
