Between 2005 and 2009, Clarivate indexed 228,510 papers that listed at least one author address in Italy. Of those papers, the highest percentage was indexed under the heading of space science, followed by neuroscience & behavior. In space science, the impact of papers to which Italy-based authors contributed was 22% above the world average in the field (9.36 citations per paper for Italy, versus 7.69 cites for the world). The nation also performed strongly in clinical medicine (28% above the world mark), physics (25% above), agricultural sciences (+19%), and materials science (+19%).
