Between 2006 and 2010, Clarivate indexed 381,181 papers that listed at least one author address in Japan. Of those papers, the highest percentage appeared in journals indexed under the main heading of physics, followed by pharmacology & toxicology. As the right-hand column shows, the impact (or, citations per paper) mark for papers featuring Japan-based authors was 5% above the world figure for the five-year period (4.69 citations per paper for Japan versus the world average of 4.46). Although Japan currently lags the world average in many of the fields shown, the nation’s performance in relative impact was strong in space science (17% above the world mark), immunology (+13%), and geosciences (+11%).
