It’s time once again for Science Watch’s yearly look back at the hottest of recent research. Presented in the table below are the authors who, as of late 2003, had published the greatest number of Hot Papers over the preceding two years. The table below lists the (non-review) papers published in 2003 that achieved the highest citation totals by the end of the year (those cited 40 or more times as of late December).

Topping the list of researchers, and making his fourth consecutive appearance among the year’s "hottest" authors (also having made the honor roll back in 1997), is Eric S. Lander of the Whitehead Institute’s Center for Genome Research. Lander’s eight Hot Papers on genomics and gene-expression profiling include a 2002 Nature report on the initial sequencing of the mouse genome; this paper is currently #2 in the Biology Top Ten. Another Lander report, from Science, examining haplotype blocks in the human genome, also appears in the current Top Ten (paper #10). More recently, in addition to his eight Hot Papers over the last two years, Lander co-authored two of 2003’s most-cited papers (#33 and #35).

Sharing the top spot with Lander is a name long familiar in biomedical circles, although new to the Science Watch annual roundup: Rory Collins, of the Clinical Trial Service Unit (CTSU), University of Oxford. Collins’s eight Hot Papers include six co-authored with his equally eminent colleague, CTSU founder Sir Richard Peto, who is also featured on the list. Among their highly cited clinical studies and meta-analyses published over the last two years are two of the hottest papers in medicine: a study of the cholesterol-lowering drug simvastatin (see Medicine, paper #3) and a meta-analysis of antiplatelet therapy in cardiovascular disease (paper #10). One of Collins’s current Hot Papers published in 2003 also registered among the year’s most cited (#30).

Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator Brian J. Druker returns to the list for the second year in a row, thanks to seven Hot Papers on the anti-leukemia drug imatinib (including one of 2003’s hottest, paper #15).

Among authors with six Hot Papers (the names in each tier of the table are ranked according to citations per Hot Paper), the first is Michael J. Thun of the American Cancer Society. The compilations of cancer statistics by Thun and colleagues, although not included among the "discovery accounts" typically featured in this publication’s regular Top Ten coverage, are very highly cited. In fact, the latest such report, "Cancer Statistics, 2003" (A. Jemal, et al., CA-Canc. J. Clin., 53[1]: 5-26, Jan-Feb 2003), was cited over 200 times in 2003—more than any other paper published last year (although it’s excluded, along with reviews, from the accompanying list of the year’s most cited). Thun’s other Hot Papers over the last two years include studies of lung cancer and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

In a timely appearance, HHMI’s Roderick MacKinnon, co-winner of the 2003 Nobel Prize in chemistry, makes the list with six Hot Papers on the structure and function of cellular potassium channels. Two such reports from 2003 rank with the year’s most cited (#12 and #40).

Rounding out the list is Steven M. Haffner, University of Texas Health Science Center, San Antonio, with six Hot Papers on aspects of diabetes and heart disease.

As to the list of 2003’s most-cited reports (presented with the usual caveat that papers published early in the year have an obvious advantage in accruing citations), perhaps the most striking feature is its correspondence to current events, with 11 of the 45 papers devoted to SARS [see also].End of article
