Having surveyed high-impact research in the physical and biomedical sciences within the last year, Science Watch now turns its attention to clinical medicine. Listed are the 20 researchers who, as of June 1998, attracted the highest number of citations to their papers published in ISI-indexed journals of clinical medicine since 1981. The tables on the following page present additional names broken down by four main subfields, featuring the most-cited researchers in cardiology, oncology, epidemiology, and surgery/transplantation.

These names represent highlights of a data file containing researchers who have each earned at least 7,000 citations to their collective papers published in ISI-indexed clinical medicine journals over the last 17 years. [And it must be emphasized that these citation counts are limited only to articles published in clinical medicine journals. Citations to papers that these authors published in journals of basic biological sciences have not been taken into account for these rankings.]
