To identify the citation superstars in U.K. science over the last decade, Science Watch examined a special subset of the ISI® database: researchers with U.K. affiliations whose papers published since 1990 have been collectively cited more than 1,000 times. Working down the preliminary list, which was ranked by total citations, Science Watch then assigned each researcher to one of two very broad categories: biomedical sciences, listed above, and physical sciences, on the following page. Atop the biomedical ranking, Moncada's citation total attests to the pervasive influence of nitric oxide (NO) on 1990s research–and to the centrality of Moncada's work. His 1991 NO paper in Pharmacological Reviews, for example (with coauthor Richard M.J. Palmer, #6 on the list), has now been cited more than 6,500 times and is one of the decade's most-cited papers. Moncada, not surprisingly, was featured two years ago among 24 prolific
authors of "high-impact" biomedical papers identified by this
publication (see Science Watch 8[5]:1-2, September/October
1997).
Another "high-impact" author highlighted on that occasion was David P.
Lane, whose research into tumor-suppressor genes and other aspects of cell
biology has attracted nearly 17,000 citations, placing him at #2 in the current
ranking. In a 1998 Science Watch survey of worldwide biomedical research
(9[3]:1-2, May/June 1998), Lane, Moncada, and Palmer were joined by Peter J.
Barnes, who registers at #5 on the present list with studies of asthma and other
respiratory and thoracic disorders. Research on asthma, in fact, brings other
names to the top third of the biomedical list, including A. Barry Kay (#7) and
Stephen Holgate (#8)–perhaps reflecting a rise in academic interest in the
topic as the reported incidence of asthma has increased in recent years. |
