The 20 most-cited papers over the past decade follow the ebbs and flows of research possibilities in the field. After the 1995 discovery of the top quark at the Tevatron, high-energy physicists could anticipate no new discoveries until the LHC became operational in 2008, at which point the Higgs boson became a viable target.
The action in physics moved to RHIC, and the anticipated creation of a quark-gluon plasma. This explains why the top 20 list is dominated by the physics from RHIC: experimental reports from three of the detector collaborations—STAR, PHENIX, and BRAHMS—phenomenological discussions of the reported hadron production and distribution, and the evidence for a quark-gluon plasma creation and a precursor state known as a color glass condensate.
Other highly cited papers, including the number-one paper of the decade, are phenomenological analyses of Higgs boson creation at both the Tevatron and LHC, and the possibility that the LHC will be a "black hole" factory, producing miniature black holes at a rate of perhaps one every second, a phenomenon that would give support to extra-dimensional scenarios of the universe.
