Special Topic: Metabolic Syndrome> Top 20 Authors
Published July 2011
Authors | Institutions | Journals | Nations
The authors in this analysis are largely from the US, but there is also a good global representation on the top 20 lists. Seventeen of the authors are based in the US, four in Australia, five in the UK, nine in Europe, six in Asia, two in the Middle East, and one in Turkey.
Notable among the highly cited authors is Scott Grundy of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, who dominates the rankings by citations with 9,264 cites. Grundy has worked with several of researchers in the rankings, including James Cleeman, Sidney Smith, H. Bryan Brewer, Paul Zimmet, and Robert Eckel, to define metabolic syndrome. He has also done extensive research dealing with cholesterol and lipoproteins.
Paul Zimmet, who ranks at #2 by cites, hails from the Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute in Melbourne, Australia. He came into metabolic syndrome by way of diabetes epidemiology, and, as indicated, has worked to define metabolic syndrome. He is also a principal investigator in the Australian Diabetes, Obesity and Lifestyle (AusDiab) Study, a major, long-term population-based survey of diabetes, heart and kidney disease.
Because metabolic syndrome crosses paths with diabetes, obesity, and heart disease, it comes as no great surprise that some of the names on the top 20 list were also among the top 20 authors in past Special Topics. For example, Jaakko Tuomilehto of the University of Helsinki, was also among the top 20 researchers in our March 2002 analysis on diabetes and our April 2010 analysis on obesity; Yuji Matsuzawa of Sumitomo Hospital, Tohru Funahashi of Osaka University, Toshimasa Yamauchi of the University of Tokyo, J. Alfredo Martinez of the University of Navarra, and Jean-Pierre Després of the University of Laval are also among the top 20 researchers in our April 2010 analysis on obesity.

Overall General Information
Regarding Top 20 Scientists, Institutions, Journals, & Nations
Citation tables allow us to map compelling trends:
- Are there particular nations or institutions that might be expected to dominate research in the Topic area, and do the numbers bear out these expectations, or are there surprises?
- Who are the leading scientists and where are they located?
While these tables cannot offer a complete picture, the number of trends and anomalies that can be spotlighted or connected across categories is striking. The tables often lead to renewed perspectives to further explore and validate.
What are Special Topics?
Special Topics, from ScienceWatch.com, is designed to complement Essential Science IndicatorsSM from Clarivate in providing citation analyses and commentary for selected scientific research areas that have experienced notable recent advances or are of special current interest.
