10-Year Papers | 2-Year Papers
The most-cited paper dealing directly with metabolic syndrome over the past 10 years is the 2002 JAMA paper by Earl Ford and his colleagues at the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention, examining the prevalence of metabolic syndrome among the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey population. Diagnostic and management guidelines, as well as definitions and consensus statements, also feature prominently on this decadal list.
Other topics covered on the 10-year list include the prevalence and risk factors of metabolic syndrome in children, adolescents, and adults; cardiovascular morbidity and mortality and all-cause mortality associated with metabolic syndrome; the roles of c-reactive protein and oxidative stress in metabolic syndrome; nonalcoholic fatty liver disease as a feature of metabolic syndrome; and a transgenic model of visceral obesity and metabolic syndrome.

About the 10-year Paper List:
The baseline time span for this database is January 1, 2001-May 12, 2011.
The resulting database contained 37,497 (10 years) and 14,334 (2 years)
papers. To construct the initial data pool, the keywords "metabol*"
AND "syndrome*" were used to search titles, abstracts, and keywords of
original articles, reviews, and proceedings papers published in the
Web of Science® database from
Clarivate between
January 1, 2001 and May 12, 2011.
To make the paper lists more on-point, we restricted to those articles containing the keyword "metabolic syndrome*" in the title. The resulting database contained 6,515 (10 years) and 2,504 (2 years) papers.
This information pertains to both the 2- and 10-year papers.
General Information
Reviewing highly cited papers can help to determine what research areas within a Special Topic have had a significant impact over a given period of time. Special Topics lists the 20 most-cited papers over the past decade and over the past two years, based on a set of criteria uniquely tailored to each individual Topic. Details of these criteria are given within each Topic.
By examining highly cited papers over both the past decade and over the most recent two-year period, we can make observations and comparisons regarding long-term trends and more recent activity that has the potential to be the next long-term trend.
What are Special Topics?
Special Topics, from ScienceWatch.com, is designed to complement Essential Science IndicatorsSM from Clarivate in providing citation analyses and commentary for selected scientific research areas that have experienced notable recent advances or are of special current interest.
Read about the overall methodology for Special Topics in the "What are Special Topics?" page.
