The 20 most-cited papers over the past decade deal with a variety of different topics, but they boil down to effects of petroleum contamination, methods for petroleum analysis, potential remediation methods, and studies of oil biodegradation.
Specific geographic areas affected that are examined include the Exxon Valdez spill, the lingering effects of a 1969 spill in West Falmouth, Massachusetts, contaminated soil sites in Canada, and petroleum contamination sources in the Black Sea. Other papers examine the effects of petroleum contamination on individual species, such as the Atlantic cod and pink salmon.
Hydrocarbon fingerprinting and two-dimensional gas chromatography are two methods discussed to help identify specific petroleum biomarkers. Potential methods for remediation include exfoliated graphite, natural attenuation, biostimulation, and bioaugmentation.
The biodegradation of oil is important to both the industry itself and for its potential for remediation. Several papers on the 10-year list examine the various aspects of petroleum microbiology, from anaerobic hydrocarbon biodegradation in oil reservoirs to composting in biopiles for contaminated soils.

About the 10-year Paper List:
The baseline time span for this database is 2000-June 30, 2010 (third bimonthly period 2010)*. The resulting database contained 5,753 (10 years) and 1,691 (2 years) papers. To construct the top 20 papers lists for the past decade and the past two years, the papers were further narrowed down by the title keywords "petroleum" OR "oil*." This adjustment resulted in the top 20 papers being selected from a pool of 2,501 (10 years) and 725 (2 years) papers.
This information pertains to both the 2- and 10-year papers.
General Information
Reviewing highly cited papers can help to determine what research areas within a Special Topic have had a significant impact over a given period of time. Special Topics lists the 20 most-cited papers over the past decade and over the past two years, based on a set of criteria uniquely tailored to each individual Topic. Details of these criteria are given within each Topic.
By examining highly cited papers over both the past decade and over the most recent two-year period, we can make observations and comparisons regarding long-term trends and more recent activity that has the potential to be the next long-term trend.
What are Special Topics?
Special Topics, from ScienceWatch.com, is designed to complement Essential Science IndicatorsSM from Clarivate in providing citation analyses and commentary for selected scientific research areas that have experienced notable recent advances or are of special current interest.
Read about the overall methodology for Special Topics in the "What are Special Topics?" page.
