In terms of specialty areas, two fields stand out: materials science and space science. Japan’s contribution to world literature in materials science constitutes one of its highest areas of concentration, with Japan accounting for more than 10% of papers indexed by Clarivate in the field over a recent five-year period. And space science represents an area of particularly strong performance, with Japan’s percentage of the world’s highly cited space-science papers actually exceeding its overall percent share of the field.
The following tables take a closer at these two fields, ranking individual Japan-based institutions according to their average citations per paper, based on reports indexed by Clarivate between 2005 and 2009.
