Article Title: Using historical data, expert
judgement and multivariate analysis in assessing reference
conditions and benthic ecological status, according to the
European Water Framework Directive

Factor Analysis undertaken for M-AMBI
calculation in oligo-mesohaline waters,
within Basque estuaries. Red circle
indicates ‘bad reference
conditions’, blue circle
indicates ‘high reference
conditions’, and the other
circles are the monitored sampling
stations. The vectorial distance
between each location and the high
reference conditions represents the
ecological status, assessed by
M-AMBI.

Map of the Basque Country (northern
Spain), showing the benthic ecological
status within estuarine and marine
waters, assessed by means of M-AMBI, in
2006. The colours are according with
the five quality status required by the
Water Framework Directive.
