England's world share of science and social-science papers over a recent
five-year period, expressed as a percentage of papers in each of 22 fields
in the
Thomson
Reuters database. Also, England's relative citation impact
compared to the world average in each field, in percentage terms. These
figures pertain to England alone and do not include Scotland, Wales, or
Northern Ireland.

Between 2003 and 2007, Thomson Scientific indexed 315,009 papers that
listed at least one author address in England. Of those papers, the highest
percentage appeared in journals classified under the heading of space
science, followed by education and economics & business. As the
right-hand column shows, the citations-per-paper score for space-science
papers from England exceeded the world average in the field by 32% (10.32
average citations for England versus the world score of 7.80). In all the
other fields, similarly, England surpassed the world average, with notably
strong performance in plant & animal science (61% above the world
mark), agricultural sciences (57% above), and physics (+42%).
